THE CLASSIC MARGARITA
The classic Sophie Bell Margarita is a sweet little name my team assigned to my absolute favourite Marg, which also serves as the base to any other Marg I make.
I’ll share how I make it exactly, down to the tequilas I like to use, but I’ll also run through where you can modify it to make your own classic (insert-your-name-here) Margarita!
MIX
45ML OF REPOSADO TEQUILA
JUICE 2-3 LIMES
LOTS OF ICE
FLAKY SALT
SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE

PREPARE YOUR SALT
Lay out some flaky salt on a small saucer. This will help you dip the glass into the salt for the perfect salty rim.
PREPARE YOUR GLASS
I like to use an Old Fashioned style whiskey glass, because I love my Margarita over ice.
Salt the rim by wiping a cut lime around the top of the glass, and dipping it on a plate of flaky salt. One this is done, fill the glass to the top with ice.
THE COCKTAIL
- In a shaker, juice 2-3 limes and add your tequila
- Fill the shaker with ice
- Shake, shake, shake!
- Strain the mix into your prepped glass
- Add your garnish (I love a thin sliced lime, or some dehydrated fruit (link)!)
This is a super easy recipe that you can’t make wrong! You can, however, alter her to make her your own! The Sophie Bell Marg is limey (because the limes!) and warm (because of the reposado, baby!). She’s not sweet, and she’s not crisp but if that’s your thing, the two elements below will help you adjust this recipe to create your perfect situation.
SWEETENER
This is obviously an easy one, but as usual, there are so many variations that can create totally different flavours! For example, if you love the warmth of the reposado, you might prefer your marg sweetened by honey, a darker agave, or a brown sugar or coconut sugar simple syrup.
If you like that lighter flavour and plan on switching up tequilas, you could go for a light agave, or a neutral white sugar simple syrup. This is a cool article that could give you some more info if you’re really into finding that perfect balance!
A cute adjustment I sometimes like, when I want a sweeter version of the classic Sophie Marg is replacing the juice of one of the limes with a bit of freshly squeezed orange juice. This adds that sweetness without messing with the flavour I like at all.
TEQUILA
Like I mentioned in the Marg Intro (link) I’m a big fan of a reposado tequila. Check out some of these ones if you want to explore a few that really hit the spot:

Alternatively, a Blanco tequila, which unfortunately just isn’t my thing, is perfect if you like a lighter, crisper Marg that really hits those citrusy notes. Most Margs you order out will use a Blanco unless you ask for something different, so this is probably the taste you’re used to and is a great place to start if you’re new to the Marg game (but, where have you been!?).
